Welcome to the Giraldo Lab!

We are a team of interdisciplinary scientists working at the interface between nanotechnology, plant and algae biology. We are developing nanotechnology based tools to understand and engineer photosynthetic organism function for a more sustainable agriculture, and advancing energy and biomanufacturing technologies. Our nanotechnology approaches are enabling targeted delivery of agrochemicals, therapeutics and DNA to plants and algae. Our optical nanosensors allow communication between photosynthetic organisms and electronic devices for understanding cell signaling and monitoring organism health in real time. We are discovering how physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles affect their interactions with plant and algae biosurfaces and biomolecules. Using nanotechnology and bioengineering approaches, we seek to turn photosynthetic organisms into technology by enabling them with novel functions such as environmental monitoring or biomanufacturing platforms.

The lab shares affiliations with Botany and Plant Sciences, Material Science and Engineering, Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, Center for Plant Biology, Microbiology, Cell Molecular and Developmental Biology and the NSF Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology.
